I took my 67 VW Bug in for some work I just can’t do at home. One of the guys at the shop came up and asked if I want to trade Bugs. A little background on my car. It’s got a factory sunroof, is in good shape body wise (minor rust, except for a crusty running board). The engine is strong.
His car is a lowered Bug, hardtop, no rust and looks better than mine (all I saw was a picture on the phone). Now I’d have to get much more hands on before I trade but it’s got me thinking. I wonder if 67 with a factory sunroof is rare/valuable car because he’s willing to trade his for mine.

Seems like there’s probably a reason he would want to trade. Personally, I’d keep what I know.

67 is a great year for air cooled, type 1 and 2. I would really need the details to see if it was worthwhile. Last year of the “classic” beetle style but with 12V stock. Sunroof is slightly rarer but it is more the year of yours.
Also what can you not do on that thing on the side of the road with a hammer and 3 wrenches?

Don’t do it. Trading a car you know the history of for one that’s been modified by someone else, no sir.

If you like his better then why not but you’ll end up with a whole lot of unknowns.

Yup. That it’s a ‘67 would explain why the guy wants it (other than the old split-window and oval-window Bugs of the ‘50s, it’s the highest-demand year).
It’s hard to give much specific advice on a swap like this, because a lot depends on what year his is, how it was modified and what you want to do with the car. Lowered could mean a lot of things: he could have dropped spindles on the front, a cut-and-turned front beam, or both. Heck, it could even have a narrowed front beam on top of everything else.
Buying any modified car is a bit of a crapshoot, because you’re at the mercy of how well the modifications were performed, what they do to the performance of the car, and what it means when you're trying to maintain a non-standard setup. Lowered cars, for example, look neat, but you’re giving up ground clearance: my own ‘66 Bug, which I set up for autocross, is a bit lowered and has a giant Magnaflow muffler hanging underneath, which is fine when I’m autocrossing, but can be a pain in the neck to drive out in the real world.
That's why I‘d never recommend my car for someone’s daily driver, because I’ve been there, done that, and bought something else to daily drive. It’s something I’m going to have to be up-front about when I put my Bug on the market here in the next couple weeks - my car’s been so heavily modified now that while it’s a blast when you’re driving it for fun, it’s too high-strung to be a daily driver. This guy may be in a similar boat, and in addition to trying to score a sought-after '67, he may want something closer to stock.

yup, well said. I would keep the 67 all day.
Out of the grey here too

I am pretty good with everything except electrical. I’ll farm that bit out for sure.

yeah it is weird science man. Make sure to take note of the fantastic other response to my reply on here. I think between the two of us we laid it out pretty good why you should keep the ‘67

it’s a 67 for a 67.

make sure you let me know when you have some pictures of both - and an original one will hold its value better than a modded one usually, depending on what has been done

I will and thanks for taking the time to comment. I appreciate it.

Thanks for the advice. I really like the lowered stance but do realize you sacrifice to get it. I will not even consider the offer till he brings his 67 to the shop and I get to get deep into it.
